Mental Exercises For Improved Learning And Memory

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

As you may already know, your brain functions in a complicated manner. The left side of your brain controls the actions and movement of the right part of your body while the right side of your brain controls that movement of the left part of your body. So, it may be possible that the side of your brain that controls your dominant hand is more used than the opposite side. So, if you were to use your non-dominant hand in doing some of your daily activities, could it better your brain’s performance?

If you are a right handed individual, then most of the time you are stimulating the left part of your brain. Now, if you use your left hand in doing certain activities, then you are able to stimulate the right side of your brain in addition to the left. By doing so, you are awakening the part of your mental faculties that is intuitive and creative. On the other hand, if you are a left handed individual, and you use your right hand in doing simple activities, then you are stimulating the side of your brain that is rational and organized.

This idea is supported by Tony Buzan, the author of a book entitled Using Both Sides of the Brain. According to him, doing simple mind exercises or cross-trainings like this bring in additional features to one’s mental functioning, and at the same time there will be a total improvement in one’s brain power. By doing so regularly, an individual may stay mentally young and fresh.

Other activities which can stimulate the other side of your brain may be done without really straining yourself. You can just simply walk around your room with your eyes shut close, or you can get dressed and then undress with closed eyes. You can also revisit your childhood games; the game where you rub your stomach with one hand while your other hand is tapping your head is also a good brain exercise. Simple activities like these already act as physical exercise for your brain, and they can already bring positive effects to your brain, no matter how trivial they may seem.

So, you may begin to wonder regarding the mental condition of those people who are blessed to be able to use both their hands for complicated activities such as writing, or simply put the ambidextrous. You may think that since they are stimulating both sides of their brain that they are more intelligent than others. This is a misconception; there are no studies or research that can attest to this idea.

There are people who are able to teach and train themselves to use both their dominant and non-dominant hands to do activities, as well as sports like the cricket players. But their training does not necessarily turn them into academic geniuses; so perhaps, this is just too much to ask for.

So, whether or not these simple mental exercises may make you a little bit more intelligent, these physical exercises are still believed to have positive effects on your brain. Academically, the results may just be minor, or even unnoticed, but there can be other aspects which are affected, such as your creativity, organization and other features. One thing worth noting is that by performing these exercises, you are stimulating the part of your brain which is not used as often as the other part. Don’t you think it might be best to keep them balanced? If you want to better your brain’s performance, you might as well try to stimulate your whole brain, and not just a single side.

Find Your Inspiration

Friday, January 29th, 2010

Along with determination and belief is being enthusiastic about your goal. Everything that happens along the way is another joyous milestone, moving you closer to success. Enthusiasm adds to your positive perspective and affirms your personal motivation in the outcome.

Enthusiasm comes from inspiration. Inspiration comes from knowledge and enrichment of the mind, while ignorance fosters and intensifies fear. Inspiration also helps you to further define and detail your plan of action. Inspiration may be obtained through many sources. The most obvious is education, whether it is motivational material to keep you on your path or gaining more specific knowledge to achieve your success. Education may be reading books, magazines, and journals, taking workshops and classes, listening to tapes/CDs, and watching videos that provides motivation tips in the area of your goal. You become what you study, so expose your mind to anything and everything that adds to the achievement of your success.

Also, include educational and motivational materials that will help you after your success is achieved. Currently, you are in “the process”. Once your goal is achieved, you should already have the knowledge and motivation to use the success in a positive manner and keep it moving forward.

The people that surround you influence your path, your attitude, your determination, your belief, your inspiration, and the outcome of your success. You should surround yourself with people who share your positive vision and desire to achieve your goal. Otherwise, you may be eliminating your success through the power of association. Associations could be spending time with the people who can make your success happen. Donald Trump did just this. He associated with those people, whom he wanted to emulate and who could assist his success. Now, you may not after that type of success; however, associations still impact your goals. Here’s an example.

Darren used to be an alcoholic. After he hit bottom, he went into rehab and cleaned up his life. He joined Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and tried to convince his wife to join Al-Anon, an arm of AA that helps spouses of alcoholics to eliminate all of their “old habits” they developed over the years to cope with the alcoholism (however, they also trigger a recovering alcoholic’s past habits, as well). She refused any type of counseling and, at every opportunity, would “push Darren’s buttons”. Having difficulty retaining his sobriety under his wife’s subconscious attempts to return to her comfort zone (though it was detrimental to her well-being, since Darren was physically abusive when drunk), Darren eventually divorced his wife. He’s now been sober and happily remarried to a supporting spouse for many years.

One of the most supporting and inspirational tools to achieve success is to have a hero. Oprah Winfrey, talk show host, once told Barbara Walters, renowned interviewer and newscaster, that, if it were not for Ms. Walters, she wouldn’t be where she is today. This is a wonderful example of using a hero to achieve. The great thing about emulating heroes is that they can be living, dead or even fictitious.

Finding a hero (or heroine) to emulate gives you many achievement advantages. That person is already the success you seek. Learn all you can about them. If possible, take them to lunch and interview them. Find out what they purposefully did to achieve. What did they do differently to make the process to success easier and faster? Have photos of this person all around your living space and on your desk at work. Keep a list of the person’s traits that you wish to emulate, and incorporate them and anything that helped your hero to achieve into your plan of action.

Look around you. There are many sources of inspiration for you to draw upon. The more inspired you get, the more likely you will strive to achieve your life goals.

Start Achieving Your Goals Now

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

You have a dream. Maybe you want to scale Mt Everest, move to another country to earn money for your future, start your own business or even go back into the working world after spending a few years taking care of the kids.

Why aren’t you doing it? What’s holding you back?

Listen, a dream is a vision in our mind. Creative dreaming without action is a far-fetched realization to achieve goals.

Typical examples are the great wonders of the world, those landmarks that typify or define the greatness of nations. Landmarks like the Statue of Liberty of the United States of America, the Big Ben of England, the Taj Mahal of India, the Great Wall of China, and numerous more. Imagine if no one took action on these great ideas, these dreams, will people from every nation on earth be able to enjoy them? What kind of achievement will each nation have if great thinkers just sit on their ideas and never acted on it. Absolutely nothing. We would probably be facing each other blankly wondering why and what went wrong?

Probably you’d say: “Oh… well… we still have the natural wonders like Niagara Falls, Mt. Fuji, beautiful coral reefs everywhere on earth.”. You are right… but these are God’s creations. God did not create man in His own image if He thinks we won’t be using our creativity and put it into action. He might as well take it away from us. He expects us to do something about it. So what’s keeping us from taking action and make our ideas materialize? We can name a few. The fear of failure is our biggest deterrent. Fear of being ridiculed, fear of sinking further to a depressed state than we presently are, fear of totally losing all we’ve got if we don’t succeed, fear of taking risks. We can’t avoid risks. Risk may come to us in a variety of reasons, big or small. There are risks we can do without, but there are risks that leave us no option but to take action and act on it.

As you can see, risks come in many forms. For comparison purposes, let us consider two: risk similar to winning or losing when we gamble and risk in pursuit of a goal.

The risk involved in gambling is for non-thinkers. This is tantamount to luck risk, not good judgment risk. Risk of this kind has no room in goal realization. It is like ignoring safety on the road, just for kicks, come what may, short-lived, to satisfy a craving.

However, risk in pursuit of a goal has a definite lasting purpose, a purpose that will bring untold benefits once you achieve your personal lifetime goals. It is a risk worth taking for thinkers, not for happy-go-lucky non-thinkers. Risk in pursuit of a goal will bring stability and security in life, ultimately leading to happiness.

Whenever fear grips us, think positively. Look at it this way. Will we ever get anywhere if we don’t take the risk to act on our dreams? Will we be happy with out inaction, five, ten, or twenty years from now? If you notice, there is one common denominator that is holding us back from taking action to achieve our dreams, that thing called fear. Fear is the biggest stumbling block to acting on a creative dream that it practically holds everything still. So it is vital that we eliminate fear in our feelings to build the bridge to our goal.

To overcome this fear, we have to face fear on the face, eye to eye, mano y mano. Let us take a very familiar example, say you have a fear of speaking in public. I guess a majority of us do. The worst thing that can happen is you will get tongue-tied and mess up your entire speech in spite of having memorized the entire thing. You become the laughing stock of the audience. Don’t let it prevent you from speaking in public the next time around because if you do, fear has won over you and you will be cowering in this kind of fear for the rest of your life. To win over fear, draw lessons from your failure and capitalize on it the next time around. Don’t stop till you have successfully made a good speech. Once you do, you have actually turned the table around. This time, it is fear that fears you.

Another example with a somewhat different twist, say you are a lifeguard and you failed to save a drowning person who apparently should have been saved. Now this is a big failure because a life was at stake here. In spite of this, don’t give up being a lifeguard just because of one mistake. Think about the other lives you have saved before and will be saving if you continue to do so. Say you were able to save a person in an otherwise hopeless situation, doesn’t this offset or overcome the previous failure that happened?

The idea here is to give your best. Once you give your best, it just doesn’t get any better because it is already the best.

When you act on your dreams, think of your actions in a positive way. What you think is what will happen. What the mind can conceive, the body can achieve. Believe that the likely outcome of a thing that we do depends mostly on how we set our mind on it. Our actions start from our thoughts and the result that we get is dictated by our mind as well. If we think it will fail, it will. If we think it will succeed, it will. Mental thinking or attitude is the master of the actions we undertake. Where your mental attitude is directed for a longer period of time, it is more difficult to change to the opposite direction. If your mind is programmed to think negative thoughts, the more difficult it will be to change to positive thoughts if you do not do something about it immediately. However, if your mind is already programmed to think positive thoughts for a long time, it will remain firm on this attitude as time goes by. If your thoughts are on defeat then that is the only outcome. You may say: “I told you so” that an action has failed because you think it will, just to satisfy yourself when in fact, you are just looking for an excuse or easy way out. The end result is still a failure and what does that make you, a failure. You are just fooling yourself.

On the other hand, success is imminent when your thoughts say it will. Even if it fails the first time, you will learn from your failure and when you try again, you will ultimately succeed as you gain more experience. Keep on trying and persevering. There should be no let up and when success is at hand, you would have defeated defeat.

Here’s another nugget of thought. If you go all out and risk everything, there is nothing left to risk. When that happens, you’ll see that the only possible outcome is success. Don’t give up your dreams without even fighting for them just because the risks are too great.

The greater the risk, the bigger the reward and success is sweeter. Either way, whether you achieve your dream or not, you will come out of it a better person.

How To Enhance Your Event With A Motivational Speaker.

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

Your choice of speaker can make or break you conference, meeting or seminar. Is it worth opting for the popular choice of a motivational speaker? When carefully chosen to match your event, yes.

Celebrities, sportspeople, academics and experts are just some of the types of motivational speakers available. Because of this, a very important choice is made more complicated.

You can find speakers who are known as experts in their corporate sector. Perhaps they don’t have any real celebrity, but they are most probably well known to your audience. Speakers like these can often endorse new business systems which you may be implementing at the time of the event. The speaker will most probably be able to draw on positive examples and success stories which will motivate and inspire the audience. This type of speaker might even be able to bring a reluctant audience around to your way of thinking.

There are also motivational speakers who are regarded as successful but not as experts. These pseudo-celebrities often have heart-warming stories of success or courage in the face of adversity. You shouldn’t automatically write off this sort of person though. Being living proof that ‘anyone can do it’ can be a motivation. Because they aren’t experts they may not be ideal for corporate events. This doesn’t mean they cannot produce results. The stories such speakers can share can be used at a variety events such as careers fairs and support groups.

Finally, sports men and women are frequently employed as motivational speakers. They often speak of dedication and perseverance which often raise morale. These speakers are actually very flexible and have proven great choices at sporting events, educational events and even some corporate events.

Need Help And Tips About Bach Flower Essences – Find Them Here.

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

Bach flower essences are unique herbal remedies developed by prominent English physician Dr. Edward Bach. He made them to cure the emotional disorders which prevent the patients from healing. Dr. Bach was sure that the physical disease is the evident symptom of the inner imbalance. He wanted his remedies to be not only helpful, but also safe. He believed that it was possible to create the remedies with no side effects and contra-indications so that everyone could use them and recover.

Dr. Bach decided that the components for his remedies must be fully natural. He thought that nature can be the only source of the remedy component which wouldn’t do any harm to the patients. He worked out two ways to prepare the remedies. They are the Sun method and the Boiling method. Each remedy is prepared according to one of them. The choice of the right method is performed according to the time the plants are gathered to prepare the remedies. The Boiling method is used when the Sun method cannot be applied. One and the same flower for the remedy will be prepared according to the only definite method. In order to learn what exact method is used for this or that remedy, find the special literature on Bach essences.

According to the Sun method the flower parts are gathered and put to the bowl with spring water. This bowl is left in full sunshine for nearly an hour. Dr. Bach believed that the sun extracts the plant energy from the plants and fills the water with it. In this way the plant energy can be assimilated by the human. Then the flowers are taken out. The dilution is called mother tincture. In order not only to receive but also to preserve the properties of the plant energy, the alcohol is used. As a rule it is pure brandy. The resulting mixture is stored in the stock bottles. Sometimes some more alcohol is added to secure the preservation.

According to the Boiling method the flower parts are boiled in the spring water for some time. Then the mixture is cooled, the flower component is taken out and the dilution is just the same as mother tincture in the Sun method. The further process is also the same as in Sun method. The remedy is preserved and put into the stock bottles.
The remedy for treatment is prepared separately. The stock bottles contain the pure essences. Several drops of it (up to 4) are diluted in 30 ml of the spring or mineral water. It’s not required that the remedy consisted of the only Bach essence. You can prepare your own by adding several essences into the same treatment bottle. In this way you can mix your individual treatment.

Listen to your intuition when adding the essences. You might receive the remedy right for you.

Looking For Knowledge And Tips About The Influence Of Bach Flower Therapy On Emotional State — Read This Post .

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

Bach flower remedies are known all over the world as unique herbal emotional healers. Dr. Bach was a famous English physician. Unlike other doctors at that time he was sure that the reason of physical illness is inside and cannot be found in the external symptoms. Moreover, he thought that the patient cannot be cured if the doctor simply removes the physical consequences of the disorder. Dr. Bach was willing to create the safe remedies which would be able to awaken the inner energy of his patients. This energy will make them recover without any other help. He was also convinced that the common medicines can do harm to the patients if they contain some toxic components. It doesn’t matter what dose of these components is included in the medicine. He was sure that doctors didn’t treat their patients right if they used harmful medicines.

Dr. Bach managed to create his ideal remedies. He used only natural components to make them and therefore anyone could use them freely. Nowadays Bach’s approach to healing has lots of followers.

When the doctor treats the patient with Bach remedies, it’s important to leave the physical symptoms aside. The prescription is to be made according to the character, mood and emotional state of the patient. It is rather difficult, but Bach remedies are not intended for healing physical illnesses. There are other remedies to cope with them if the treatment is not enough. Bach remedies can be easily combined with any other treatment, both from classical and complementary medicine. They don’t interfere in the action of other medicines. The doctor should be a good psychologist to be able to make the right prescription of Bach flower essences. Sometimes patient and doctor can make the prescription together. It’s also possible to apply the Bach essence mixtures.

The remedies influence the emotional state of the patient. They eliminate the negative thoughts and bring calm to the patients. Each of the remedies stores the definite energetic pattern which can be assimilated by the human. These patterns struggle against the definite negative state. Dr. Bach created his own classification of negative emotional states peculiar to his patients. The remedies don’t change the personality in any way. They just awaken the hidden traits of character and abilities. They can change the consciousness; make the person understand the life and the surrounding better. The person taking the Bach remedies is able to learn and apprehend more fully.

In case the treatment includes the mixtures, it is recommended to use not more than six essences. Dr. Bach could use even more but he was the creator of the remedies and could therefore predict the result. Don’t use the remedies by chance. It would be better to consult your doctor first. Use the remedies until you feel better but no longer. You cannot overdose but this recommendation was made by Dr. Bach during his practice. Enjoy healing with pure natural remedies.

Curing Disorders With Hypnotism

Monday, January 18th, 2010

Hypnotism is the practice of a hypnotherapist guiding a subject into a meditative state. Unfortunately there is a lot of confusion around about what is and is not hypnotism. Ever since the beginning of hypnotism, people have been fascinated by it.

A state of mind that can more easily be manipulated by outside forces for the affect of curing a disorder is often the goal in hypnosis. The hypnotherapist will help the patient they are treating achieve this meditative state of mind so that the new measures suggest by the hypnotherapist can be accepted more readily than they would under the patients normal state of mind.

Although only abut 25% of the population can be hypnotized easily, even less people, roughly 20%, cannot be hypnotized at all, according to a recent survey. Much more of the population lies in the middle with some ability to be hypnotized, and some ability to have disorders at least partially cured through hypnosis, although most people would agree it is certainly not an exact science.

Perhaps now is a good time to see an example to explain this a little more clearly.

Lets take the example of a chain smoker. One way that a hypnotist may treat this smoker is to first hypnotize the smoker into a deep meditative state. Once in this meditative state the hypnotherapist will ask the subject about all the reasons why they smoke and all of the negative thoughts that they have about smoking and the negative affects that smoking has on their life. The hypnotist will then ask the smoker to think of good thoughts that they would experience if they gave up smoking. These thoughts are repeated as part of the therapy and these thoughts are also spoken out loud. In this way the hypnotist helps to change the perceptions of the patient about smoking.

During visits to the hypnotist the patients perceptions are altered towards the goal of there therapy, but its up to the patient to continue with these perceptions after hypnosis has finished to be successfully treated.

Quitting smoking using hypnotism has worked for a large variety of people, many of whom go on to recommend the practice to their friends and family.

Like anything in life, its always challenging to try something new, and our fears of the unknown often hold us back, but really what have you got to lose ?

Need Help And Tips About Bach Flower Remedies – Find Them Here.

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

Bach flower remedies are unique medicines developed by Dr. Edward Bach. He was a famous English physician. Dr. Bach made a long way to his discovery. He studied surgery, bacteriology and homeopathy before he came to the idea of his herbal essences. He was always willing to help people and was sure that doctors don’t do their work right if they don’t pay attention to the emotional state of the patient along with the physical disorders. Dr. Bach claimed that every patient has the inner energy which is helpful in restoring his health. He thought that the patient’s attitude can turn this energy on the positive way and the disease will be eliminated without any external interference.

Dr. Bach was a good psychologist too and as he discovered the concept of emotional healing, he continued his work in this sphere. After the numerous studies during his practice he defined 38 mind states which were harmful for the patients and prevented them from recovering. These negative states of mind were to be neutralized during the treatment according to Dr. Bach. After the long research he presented the herbal remedies to cure these mind states.

There were 38 remedies, one for each state. Dr. Bach didn’t want to do any harm to his patients and therefore he wanted to create safe and natural remedies that could be taken by everyone and he managed to do it. When he treated his patients, he prescribed the remedies not only according to the physical symptoms but also taking into account the emotional and mental state of the person. The patients with different traits of character but with the same disease could get different prescriptions from him. His flower essences led to patients’ recovery but it seemed that nothing else was necessary and the patients recovered themselves, without any other medicines. Negative emotions and mood appeared to be the serious reason for the progress of the diseases and Dr. Bach focused his efforts on eliminating these factors.

The Bach remedies are safe and pure. They are prepared using natural components only. The main component is the parts of the appropriate plants. However, the essences don’t have either taste or smell of these plants. The plant parts are mixed with the spring water. Then they are either left in the full sunlight or boiled. After this the plant parts are taken out and it is thought that now the spring water is full of their energy. Dr. Bach believed that the spring water preserves the positive properties of the plant energy and is the best liquid to transmit this energy to the human. Human and plant vital energy is somewhat different and the spring water makes it possible for the human to use the plant energy to restore his health. The spring water after the plant parts were taken out is called mother tincture. In order to preserve the healing properties of the tincture for a definitely long time some alcohol is added to the stock bottles. Usually it is pure brandy. However, there are essences made without it, e.g. those for children.
Everyone can find the essence right for him. If something can help you cope with the problems, don’t hesitate to try it.

Increase Your Knowledge With Speed Reading Course

Friday, January 15th, 2010

For anyone who feels like they are constantly swimming upstream against a flood of information that is coming at them, speed reading techniques can provide the tools to help them stay afloat.

As the average person’s schedule gets more packed and as data is dumped on them from all directions, people feel less capable of being able to process and retain the crucial information that they need to stay on top of things.

Speed reading training is a good idea to help people deal with the crush of information that comes at them each and every day.

When people take training and learn how to read faster, they improve their effectiveness when studying and are more productive at work. In addition, those who learn how to read fast also report that they enjoy the reading materials more, and that they not only get more from them, but that they remember what they have read better.

Training also results in enhanced comprehension levels too. While this flies in the face of logic, which would dictate that reading speed improvement would result in diminished understanding.

However, experts say that learning how to read faster actually enables the reader to feed information to the brain at a rate that is better suited for the speed at which the brain functions.

This is the basis for understanding why speed reading comprehension levels consistently test higher for speed readers, than when those reading at average to slow speeds are tested for comprehension.

In general, a quality speed reading training program is an investment that pays off in many different ways. Training the brain to be able to absorb, retain and comprehend written information is an valuable skill to master.

In the marketplace today, there are many different avenues you can choose to improve reading speed to match your learning style. Regardless of which speed reading program you select, there are four guidelines that should be remembered for best results.

Relaxation – It is very important to be in a relaxed state. High stress and tension levels will create many barriers that interfere with the ability to learn how to speed reading.

Not only should the mind be in a relaxed and settled state to assist in program speed reading, but the body should also be in a calm state. Restlessness or tension in the body can become a major distraction and can inhibit your speed reading efforts.

It is best to be in a quiet, calm and comfortable environment before attempting a reading speed course.

Read Quality Material – There are myriad choices in reading materials from which you can select, when trying to learn how to read fast. But, when you are in the process of training, it is best to choose a work that is well written and avoids “flowery” language.

Look for a text with rich content, direct presentation and little redundancy while in the learning stages. Once you have experienced reading speed improvement, you will be able to tackle any type of reading material you desire.

Watch for Keywords – Most written works have about 60% filler just to accommodate sentence structure and grammar. You will learn how to quickly zero in on the keywords or key phrases which provide the meaning. As you improve your ability to focus on these important words, your brain will be able to more quickly process the meaning of what you are reading, further accelerating your speed reading courses and comprehension.

Persistence, Practice and Patience – In order for speed reading training to be truly effective, the aspiring speed reader must set a goal and persist until they reach their goal, then set a higher goal.

In order to gain the skill of speed reading, there must also be consistent practice and patience with oneself during the process of retraining the brain. Maintaining an attitude of persistence and committing to consistent practice will enable you to learn how to read faster and to reach your potential as an accomplished speed reader.
